Canon Powershot G11, S90, SX20, SX120, SD980, SD940
While some had been expecting (and indeed predicating the specifications of) one or more new DSLRs to be annouced at Canon's August 19th (2009) press conference, in fact no new DSLRs were released. Instead, Canon announced 6 new Powershot cameras (plus a few new printers). While this doesn't exclude the possibility of new DSLR models being announced before the fall, it probably does make any such annoucements somewhat less likely.
Canon Powershot G11. Low noise, high image quality
So what's new?
- The Powershot G11 - The main news is that the "top of the line" Powershot G11 has a new "high sensitivity" 10MP sensor. This is a fairly bold step by Canon, dropping resolution from 15MP in the G10 to "only" 10MP in the G11. Of course this is something that advanced photographers have been requesting for a while in the hope that dropping the pixel count will improve the image quality at high ISO settings. According to Canon sources, the noise performance of the G11 should be up to two stops better than that of the G10. That means that image quality at ISO 3200 on the G11 should be similar to that at ISO 800 on the G10. There's also a reduced resolution (2.5MP) mode which allows shooting at ISO 12800. The G11 has a 5x 28-140/2.8-4.5 optical zoom, image stabilized of course.
- The Powershot S90 - The S90 features the same high sensitivity 10MP as the G11, coupled with a 3.8x 28-105/2.0-4.9 zoom. The fast (f2, a full stop faster than the G11) lens at the 28mm setting along with the new high sensitivity sensor should make the S90 a good camera for low light shots (at least at 28mm). RAW mode has been put back in the S90, which is a welcome addition.
- The Powershot SX20 IS - 12.1MP with a 20x optical zoom
- The Powershot SX120 IS - 10MP with a 10x optical zoom
- The Powershot SD940 IS - 12.1MP with 5x 24-120mm optical zoom, 3" touch screen.
- The Powershot SD980 IS - 12.1MP with 4x 28-112mm optical zoom
Canon Press Release
Whether a professional photographer looking for a smaller camera to tote along on assignment or a snap-happy sports fan heading to the big game, the new PowerShot digital cameras give users options for upgrading their shooting experience. All of the new cameras feature Optical Image Stabilization and use the DIGIC 4 Image Processor, the proprietary technology that accounts for the cameras' higher performance levels, improved signal processing speeds and enhanced image quality. Smart AUTO technology can now track moving faces and 22 different shooting situations (up from 18 previously) by identifying the surroundings to help ensure proper lighting and focus, providing the confidence to deliver high-quality photos in virtually any situation, from group snapshots, to landscapes, to portraits and more.
Select new PowerShot models will have the ability to shoot 720p High-Definition (HD) video, utilize the PureColor System LCD and for the first time from Canon, a PowerShot Digital ELPH camera will have a touch screen user interface for easy navigation through images and menus.
The desire to capture a clear shot of a sunrise or sunset over a mountain range can be fulfilled by using powerful features such as the brand new 10.0-Megapixel High Sensitivity System found on two of the new higher-end PowerShot cameras, the PowerShot G11 and PowerShot S90. Proven to enhance image quality in low-light situations and reduce noise at high ISO speeds, the new High Sensitivity System which is combined with the DIGIC 4 image processor, results in a faster shutter speed to help reduce subject blur and camera shake in recorded images. When it's not possible to use the flash at an event such as a wedding or a dance recital, this High Sensitivity System will help ensure images look great while making the user the envy of all in attendance.
