The EF 100-400/4.5-5.6L IS USM is Canon's best (and longest) telephoto zoom. Though perhaps not quite as sharp (and in most cases not quite as fast) as Canon's telephoto primes like the 135/2L, 200/2.8L, 300/4L IS and 4005.6L it has the advantage of covering all those focal lengths with one lens - and it's image stabilized (of the smaller telephoto primes, only the 300/4L is Image Stbilized). In addition, the 100-400/4.5-5.6L IS USM is usually sharper then shorter prime lenses used with a TC. It's an ideal lens for sports and wildlife as long as you don't need a fast aperture. It's one of only a handful of Canon lenses that uses a push-pull zoom action, but most users get used to that fairly quickly and some even prefer it. Here's a link to a detailed review of the EF 100-400/4.5-5.6L IS USM which includes comparisions with the 300/4L USM and 70-300/4-5.6IS USM and comments on use with TCs.

| Comments | Canon's best telephoto zoom. Can't quite match the sharpness of the 300/4L IS or 400/5.6L primes, but much more versatile and more than sharp enough for most users. It's a push-pull zoom which some don't like, but most can get used to. A full review of the 100-400is can be found HERE |
