Brief Review
The EF 24-105/4L IS USM is the standard general puropose "walking around" lens for full frame cameras. It cover the range from wideangle though normal, portrait and short-tele applications with a relatively fast constant f4 aperture and an effective image stabilization system, The EF 24-70/2.8L is faster, but lacks IS and has a shorter telephoto reach, The EF 24-105/4L makes an ideal travel lens for use with a full frame DSLR like the EOS 5D (MkII) since in most situations other than sports and wildlife photography it may be the only lens you need. It's still a great lens on an APS-C DSLR, but it doesn't have a very wide field of view on a crop sensor camera, so needs to be combined with something like the EF 10-22/3.5-4.5 USM if you want wide-angle coverage too.

| Comments | Often sold as a high end "kit lens" with the EOS 5D (MkII) DSLR. A very useful focal length range on full frame going from a true wideangle to a short telephoto. Useful for landscapes, travel, portraits and a a general "take everywhere" lens. The IS system is good for at least 3 stops of stabilization. On an APS-C DSLR it's not so wide, but it does match well with the EF-S 10-22 giving high quality coverage from 10mm to 105mm for the pair of lenses. The 24-105/4L IS is the lens that sits on my EOS 5D most of the time. |
